Synopsis: TransMedia Technologies, a division of Attakkalari, will be hosting Jonathan O'Hear, an internationally renowned lighting designer who is especially known for his work with light as an object of art and with unconventional ways of controlling light. Jonathan will be in Bangalore for two weeks, during which time he will be working closely with TransMedia's in-house Lighting Designers and Technicians to share his expertise and experience in the field of lighting design.
Over the weekend, Jonathan will also be conducting an Advanced workshop in lighting design which will be open to the public. The workshop is meant for lighting designers, choreographers, dancers, and anyone interested in studying light.This will be a workshop that deals with technology in lighting - both the technologies used in the past and developing and future technologies. In concordance with the multifaceted nature of light, the workshop will be a mix of theory, observation and sensing.
About the workshop:
For the workshop for the Diploma students of Attakkalari, Jonathan will address the foundations for understanding the impact of light on humans as well as the technicalities of applying the theory in a real artistic project (not necessarily a performance).
As for the workshop for general public to be held on 31 May & 1 June 2014, Jonathan will talk about lighting technology and human interference. (Introduction, discussion about using technology in lighting: Past technology/future technology, some limits of technology, why use new technologies? etc.) He will also present case studies to showcase use of video as light, use of humans instead of robots and the use of other types of interfaces than a lighting desk. In concordance with the multifaceted nature of light, the workshop will be a mix of theory, observation and sensing.
About Jonathan O'Hear Jonathan O'Hear trained as a filmmaker in Vancouver in the late 80's where he acquired a taste for manipulating light, sound and video in various contexts. Born in the UK, he grew up in Switzerland and elsewhere leading a rather nomadic lifestyle until around 2007. Today he lives in Switzerland and works primarily as a lighting designer for performing arts. 2013 marked his first exhibition as a contemporary artist and his commitment to the Neopost Foofwa dance company as joint artistic and operations director with Foofwa d'Imobilité. His interests in light revolve around three main themes, light as an artistic medium, the use of new technologies submitted to human interference, and light emitting objects. His work is often tainted by the idea that human imperfection transcends technological limitations. His recent collaborations include choreographers Foofwa d'Imobilité, Marie-Caroline Hominal, Prisca Harsch and sculptor Martin Rautenstrauch.
Jonathan has conducted workshops on the use of light as an artistic medium, in the Netherlands, India, South Africa and Mozambique, with the support of Pro Helvetia - Swiss Arts Council. He was invited to show his work by the Villa Bernasconi and the festival Antigel in Geneva.

Pro Helvetia New Delhi announces the names of the artists who have been awarded Studio Residencies for 2015 / 2016.
Pro Helvetia New Delhi announces the names of Indian and Swiss artists who have been selected by the jury to avail the Studio Residency it offers.

The applications received from the above artists were in concurrence with Pro Helvetia - Swiss Art Council's current mandate. The jury made its decision depending on the application's individual merit as well as on being able to find an appropriate host in Switzerland. Besides, preference is given to artists who are able to demonstrate the possibility of generating follow-up projects.
The selection in India was made by a jury comprising Girish Shahane, an art historian, curator and columnist; Mandeep Raikhy, choreographer and dancer; Surekha Anil Kumar, curator and artist; and Chandrika Grover Ralleigh, Head Pro Helvetia New Delhi.
The selection has been corroborated by Pro Helvetia's Specialist Departments in Zurich.

About Mirjam Fischer
A graduate from the University of Berne with a Master Degree in art history, Mirjam Fischer is a freelance book publisher. She has initiated, produced and realised among others a complex exhibition catalogue for the Kunstmuseum Bern, "The Weak Sex. Thematic Group Show of Contemporary Art," a monograph of Jean Tinguely's late work "Torpedo Institut" as well as the catalogue raisonné of Susi and Ueli Berger furniture design that will be published by Scheidegger & Spiess.
Furthermore, Mirjam extensively researched for graphic material for the artist book by Haris Epaminonda "Chapters I-XXX" that was published in conjunction with her exhibition at Kunsthaus Zürich in 2013. Simultaneously, she was in charge of the one day symposium "Rules & Schools" in Leipzig, Germany, that took place on the occasion of The Leipzig Book Fair, where Switzerland was the guest of honour in 2014. Lectures and talks illuminated questions about the historical relevance and timeliness of rules in Swiss book design. As a producer of books she had to accommodate the specific requirements of a particular book genre. In her role as a publisher, Mirjam had to address many questions such as - Can the artist's book be used as a platform of art and promote an artistic practice, must an exhibition catalogue or a short guide to the exhibition meet mainly service-oriented requirements?

Mandeep Raikhy presents Inhabited Geometry at STEPS in Switzerland
INHABITED GEOMETRY at Dance Festival STEPS scheduled to take place from 24 April to 17 May 2014.
Indian Choreographer Mandeep Raikhy of GATI Dance Forum India, has been invited to Switzerland along with his group of dancers to present INHABITED GEOMETRY at the DANCE FESTIVAL STEPS scheduled to take place from 24 April to 17 May 2014.
The multimedia work Inhabited Geometry uses transient imagery to present space as an unattainable dream, and seduces audiences with its rapid fusion of Indian Bharata Natyam and contemporary dance.
In a black and white space, the delicate and clearly defined contours of six dancers engender rapidly flowing movements to create a highly elaborate universe. In Inhabited Geometry, choreographer Mandeep Raikhy generates spaces that evoke both home and homeland, but which also make room for individuality, friction and conflict. German media artist Chris Ziegler compresses and layers the choreography using cinematic spaces, allowing the dancers to merge with the transient imagery and make one thing very clear: on the overpopulated Indian subcontinent, sufficient living space is a rare commodity.
While at home with the traditional Indian dance Bharata Natyam and the martial art Kalaripayattu, Mandeep Raikhy and his dancers are also very much in tune with contemporary European dance.

MANDEEP RAIKHY
Mandeep Raikhy was a dancer at the Shabana Jeyasign Dance Company in London between 2005 and 2009. He has been managing director of the Gati Dance Forums in Delhi since 2009. As a choreographer, he's interested in fusing India's traditional dance styles with contemporary dance. His first full-length work,Inhabited Geometry, was a success in India in 2010/11. Raikhy holds a BA from the Laban Dance Centre in London.
CHRIS ZIEGLER
After studying architecture and media art, Chris Ziegler focused his efforts on the interaction between video, dance and performance. As a freelance media artist, he designed multimedia and interactive dance workshops for the Goethe Institute in the Ukraine, Singapore and Japan and worked for William Forsythe's ballet company in Frankfurt (1999-2004). He was made an associate artist in 1993 and has worked as an assistant lecturer at the Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe since 2001.

In a digital time of unlimited access to information, where everyone can be an architect, acurator, an intellectual thinker, Hans Ulrich Obrist's Lucius Burckhardt and Cedric Price - Astroll through a fun palace revisits the recent past of architecture through retrospectivesof Lucius Burckhardt (1925-2003) and Cedric Price (1934-2003), reflecting on its future inthe 21st century.'We often invent the future with elements from the past. Lucius Burckhardt (1925-2003)and Cedric Price (1934-2003) were two great visionaries whose work resonates andinspires new generations in the 21st century.
At the core of both their work is a practice of drawing. At the centre of the project will be the archives of drawings of Cedric andLucius, of which different aspects will be revealed throughout the Biennale. About the exhibition:
It is often the case that our perceptions of contemporary architecture are not based on impressions that we obtain on site; instead, they are mediated by images. In a society which, as a result of the "iconic turn", is influenced more by images than by text, photography takes on decisive significance, also in the mediation of architecture. "BUILDING IMAGES" is conceived as a panorama of the last 25 years of Swiss architecture. Buildings which have contributed to the worldwide success of Swiss construction are presented - not by means of plans and models, but solely via the medium of photography. Here, artistic positions enter into a dialog with architectural photography. Rather than limiting itself to stringing together exemplary photographs, the presentation also sheds light on the different aspects of the relationship between image and architecture in an analytical section. The curators
Hubertus Adam / Switzerland - Director of the Swiss Architecture Museum in Basel Born in 1965, Hubertus Adam studied art history, archaeology and philosophy. He worked as an independent art historian following which he was editor of the Berlin magazine Bauwelt. Adam worked then as editor of the Zurich magazine Archithese from 1998 to 2012. In addition he has also been engaged as an independent architecture critic, mainly for the Swiss newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung. Adam has published numerous essays about architecture history mainly addressing a span from the 20th century to today. Since 2010 he has been the director of the Swiss Architecture Museum (SAM) in Basel, Switzerland.
Elena Kossovskaja / Switzerland - Co-curator Elena Kossovskaja was born in St. Petersburg in 1977 and now lives in Basel. Elena Kossovskaja studied architecture in Berlin. She worked for various architecture firms and later as an architecture journalist for a variety of magazines. Since 2010 she worked for the S AM Swiss Architecture Museum and is co-curator of the exhibition "Building Images: Photography focusing on Swiss Architecture". Elena Kossovskaja is currently doing research on the Architecture of the everyday.
12 Swiss Books
12 Swiss Books is a magazine published by Pro Helvetia to raise awareness about Swiss Literature.
In order to raise international awareness of Swiss literature, Pro Helvetia has launched a magazine named «12 Swiss Books». It is published annually to coincide with the Frankfurt Book Fair and, with each issue, presents twelve newly published works of literature from all four linguistic regions in Switzerland. These works are especially recommended for translation by the Swiss Arts Council. Available in printed, web and app form, «12 Swiss Books» offers text excerpts, brief portraits of the authors and useful information on the possibilities of support for publishers, translators and agencies.

Epiphany from Sound Reasons released
The Sound Reasons label recently released its third album, Epiphany. The compilation features Swiss artists amongst others from the Sound Reasons festival.
Announcing the release of Epiphany, the third Sound Reasons album. The compilation features artists from the Sound Reasons label and several from the Sound Reasons festival. The album draws upon the vast array of practices that Sound Reasons has been involved with, including sound art and music concrete, experimental electronic music involving analog and digital synthesis.
Artists on the album include Andy Guhl, Jasch, n0ngrata, edGeCut, Robert Millis, Salomé Voegelin, Petri Kuljuntausta, Gennady Lavrentiev, Cisfinitum and Grischa Lichtenberger amongst several others.

Swiss writer, Urs Widmer's India visit (2012)
Pro Helvetia New Delhi has invited Swiss playwright, essayist and short story writer, Urs Widmer to participate in the Hyderabad Literary Festival, Hyderabad; Long Night of Literature, New Delhi; Jaipur Literature Festival, Jaipur; and for a reading in Kolkatta organised by Seagull Books to mark the English translation of Urs Widmer's books My Mother's Lover (Der Geliebte der Mutter) and My Father's Book (Das Buch des Vaters) as part of The Swiss List, a collaboration with the Swiss Arts Council.
Urs Widmer will be accompanied by his translator Donal McLaughlin. Urs Widmer and Donal McLaughlin read together for the first time at the Edinburgh International Book Festival 2011 where My Mother's Lover was also nominated for the festival's Newton First Book Award.

Urs Widmer, Switzerland
Urs Widmer was born in Basel in 1938. He studied German, Romance languages and History in Basel, Montpelier and Paris. in 1966 he completed his doctoral thesis on German post-war prose, and then worked as an editor for Walter Publishing House in Olten, Switzerland, and for Suhrkamp Publishing House in Frankfurt. In Frankfurt he stayed for 17 years, though with Suhrkamp only till 1968. Shortly afterwards he wrote Alois. Widmer has also enjoyed success as a playwright, an essayist and a short story writer. He has received a number of awards and honours such as the Karl Sczuka Price in 1974, the Literature Price of the City of Zurich in 1996, the Franz Nabl Price in 2001, the Great Literature Prize of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts in 2002, the Friedrich Holderlin Prize of the city of Bad Homburg, Prix litteraire Lipp (Geneva) in 2007. The strength of his work lies in the view of literary criticism in their fantasy, ironic spinning of trivial action schemes of classic adventure and travel history to parody and surreal. He has also translated books from English and French, among them Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness and dramatic works by Alexander Dumas and Eugene Labiche. Together with other editors he founded the Verlag der Autoren, an author-owned publishing house focussing on texts related to the performing arts. he is a member of the German Academy of Language and Literature in Darmstadt, the German Academy of Performing Arts in Bensheim, the Academy of Arts Berlin-Brandenburg and member of the Forum Stadtpark in Graz. Urs Widmer now lives and works as a writer in Zurich.

Soirée littéraire, an evening of francophone literary encounters, is jointly presented by Embassy of the Kingdom of Belgium, High Comission of Canada, Embassy of France / Institut Français en Inde, Alliance Française de Chandigarh, Alliance Française de Delhi, Alliance Française de Pondichéry, Embassy of Switzerland and Pro Helvetia- Swiss Arts Council.

The Authors
Pascale Kramer / Switzerland
Pascale Kramer was born in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1961 and now lives in Paris. She studied literature at the University of Lausanne. After a brief stint in journalism, Pascale moved to Zurich to work as part of Jacques Séguéla's team. She later settled in Paris where she works in the field of event's organization. She organizes a documentary films festival about Children's Rights and is in charge of the programming of the African Book Fair that takes place in Geneva in the spring. She has so far published ten novels, amongst them Les Vivants (The Living, Calmann-Lévy, 2000), L'implacable brutalité du réveil (The Relentless Brutality of Awakening, Mercure de France, 2005), and more recently Un homme ébranlé (The Child, Mercure de France 2011), Gloria (Flammarion, Paris, 2013). Pro Helvetia has invited Swiss author, Pascale Kramer to participate in Soirée Littéraire 2014.
Soirée Littéraire 2014, a literary evening of contemporary writing in French.
This is the second edition of Soirée Littéraire 2014, that will include readings from the original texts by French, Belgian, Canadian and Swiss authors. Pro Helvetia New Delhi has invited Swiss author, Pascale Kramer to participate in Soirée Littéraire 2014 and represent Switzerland.

Swiss author Pascale Kramer
PASCALE KRAMER was born in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1961 and now lives in Paris. She has so far published nine novels, amongst them Les Vivants (The Living, Calmann-Lévy, 2000), L'implacable brutalité du réveil (The Relentless Brutality of Awakening, Mercure de France, 2005), and, more recently, Un homme ébranlé (A Man Shaken, Mercure de France 2011). Pro Helvetia presents Swiss artist Mai-Thu Perret's installation Balthazar at INSERT2014
Mai-Thu Perret is an internationally acclaimed Swiss artist, her multifaceted practice ranges from sculpture, installation, painting, video and textile works drawing from a wide array of art and art historic references.
Balthazar is a life-sized woven donkey sculpture made out of rattan. The donkey, suggests hard physical labour and in Christian tradition stands for the poor and for women. The subject of the work and its proximity to handicraft and design - to traditionally female occupations- is mirrored in the materiality of the rattan-donkey.

Born 1963. About Malcolm Braff
Malcolm Braff born in Rio de Janeiro, he grew up on the Cape Verdean Isles and Senegal before settling in Switzerland. The pianist, composer and aesthetic maverick has worked on his reputation as an inspiring artist who fires up the European scene with spectacular activities, especially with spectacular art. In the early Nineties projects acquainted him with fellow artists like Bänz Oester, Mathieu Michel, Samuel Blaser and also Eric Truffaz. Braff is a regular at the Cully Jazz Festival and one of the most prolific jazz pianists in Switzerland today.

The images of the condemnation and execution of dictator Nicolae Ceauşescu and his wife Elena on Christmas Day in 1989 are etched deeply in the collective unconscious of several generations of television viewers. Exactly 20 years after its occurrence, the famous show trial was re-enacted in a historically reproduced setting. The film interweaves the stage production with interviews conducted with eyewitnesses and archive material and takes a look backstage in the Odeon Theater in Bucharest.
In 2009, The Last Days of the Ceauşescu's enriched the German-language theatre with a new political format: reenactment - the artistic reconstruction of real historic events, a technique that had been fashionable in the visual arts for a long time. Milo Rau collaborated with his fellow director Simone Eisenring to translate the methodology of 'reenactment' effectively onto the stage. Basing the play on an original video recording, Rau reenacted the trial of the Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceauşescu and his wife Elena on Christmas Day 1989. The piece sparked considerable controversy. Although some critics recognised the artist's immense potential as an innovator, others appeared to be uneasy at the work's aesthetic realism, a mode that was particularly unusual on the independent theatre scene. At a fundamental level, some commentators asked themselves what was to be gained from a performance if it purportedly did nothing more than reproduce a trial that had been documented on film as faithfully to the original as possible.

'Also The Real Thing' is the first collaboration between the Indian artist and theatre director Zuleikha Chaudhari and Swiss theatre director Boris Nikitin. The project creates an artistic and sociological perspective on the cultural constructs of two highly codified spaces: the theatre and the library.
These spaces are treated as spatial installations. Both as places of representation are carried to extremes and the fictional character of the real situation - architecture, politics of the gaze, codes of behaviour - are revealed. The rules, assumptions and undiscussed agreements - the framing of both spaces/places becomes experiential and sensual.
Also The Real Thing establishes a look on "theatre" and "library" as remarkable cultural inventions, "sculptures" and strange places. They become installations - pieces of art.

The Swiss Author Monica Cantieni will be reading from her book The Encyclopedia of Good Reasons which has been translated by Donal McLaughlin as part of Seagull Books Swiss List.
The tour will include German author Thomas Lehr as well as translator Mike Mitchell, who has translated Thomas Lehr's book September, which is part of Seagull Books German List.
Mike Mitchell, translator of Max Frisch's Drafts for a Third Sketchbook , also part of the Swiss List will be speaking on translating Max Frisch and other Swiss authors.

India Art Fair has invited well known Swiss artist Peter Fischli for the Speaker's Forum. Swiss artist Peter Fischli will be in conversation with Sarnath Banerjee, Graphic Novelist, Artist and Film Maker.
Topic: The Artists' Panel / "Things in their true light." "We do take steps to show things in their true light" said Peter Fischli in 2006, at the time of the Fischli Weiss retrospective at Tate Modern. For 33 years, until the death of David Weiss in 2012, Fischli/Weiss heralded a language of the everyday that drew upon humour and observation as staple content. Sarnath Banerjee, graphic novelist will speak with Peter Fischli on humour and its possibilities in art.

Peter Fischli
Peter Fischli, born in Zurich 1952, is part of the artist duo Peter Fischli and David Weiss, often shortened to Fischli/Weiss. They have been collaborating since 1979 and are considered one of the world's top contemporary artists. Their work has been executed in a variety of media, including sculpture, film, and photography. The duo is perhaps best known for the 1987 film "The Way Things Go" (Der Lauf der Dinge) which was described by The Guardian as being "Post Apocalyptic". Fischli and Weiss won the Golden Lion prize at the 2003 Venice Biennale. A retrospective of their work was held at the Tate Modern, London, in 2006, and travelled to the Kunsthaus Zurich and the Deichtorhallen Hamburg. David Weiss passed away in 2012 at age of 65. Peter Fischli works and lives in Zurich.

Delhi SoundWords | Call for writings on Sounds of Delhi with Swiss artist Salomé Voegelin
Delhi SoundWords is a guest edition of Salomé Voegelin's regular blog soundwords.tumblr.com, to be published in connection with the Sound Reasons Festival II. This blog writes the soundscape, sonic events and occurrences of the everyday through listening: working from the heard into words to draw attention to the listening process and how we participate in our acoustic environment. The blog illuminates what a transcription of listening can produce, how it can narrate our surroundings differently, leading to different insights, sensibilities and consequences about the world we live in and how we live in it.
Artists, audience members participating in Sound Reason Festival as well as all listeners are invited to contribute with blog-entries, to make their listening of Delhi heard. The aim is to provide a different image of the city, one made from the relationships, processes and materials forming below the surface of the visible; to explore the landscape through its sound, to hear it as an environment, a timespace place that does not afford us a vista but grants us access to the mobility of its own production.
This phonographic project will be presented in London as part of "Points of Listening" a listening project organised by Mark Peter Wright and Salome in conjunction with CRiSAP (Centre for Creative Research in Sound Arts Practice) from 2014

Thomas Lehr
Thomas Lehr, born in 1957 in Speyer, has lived in Berlin since 1979. Before becoming a writer he studied biochemistry and science at the Freie Universität Berlin and worked as a programmer in a
science library. He has received a number of literary honors, including the Wolfgang-Koeppen-
Preis (2000) and the Art Prize of Rheinland-Palatinate (2006). In 2012 he was appointed as a new
member of the Arts Academy (Akademie der Künste) in Berlin. Since 1993 he has published 8 books. His novel "September" shortlisted for the "German Book Prize" in 2010 has been translated into English and is part of the "German List" by Seagull Books, Kolkata.
Mike Mitchell
Mike Mitchell was born in Rochdale, Lancashire, and studied German and French at Oxford University. He taught English at Riyad University, then German at Reading and Stirling Universities. In 1995 he took early retirement to concentrate on his work as a literary translator and has published over 70 books in translation, mainly from German, some from French. He lives in Argyll, Scotland.
